This thesis takes Kant’s critique of rational cosmology in the Antinomy as an occasion to shed light on the various metaphysical motives involved in his transcendental idealism. To this end, it considers the elements contained in the table of categories and the concepts of reflection that are essential for situating the systematic place of the Antinomy within the Critique of Pure Reason. These include, on the one hand, the judgments and categories of relation together with the concepts of interior/exterior; and, on the other, the notions of form/matter and their modal correlates in the table of categories and judgments. In this way, the opposition between transcendental idealism and transcendental realismis explained in terms of their stance to ward immanence and the formality with which actuality (Wirklichkeit) is conceived: the former takes the finitude of the human mind as its point of reference, while the latter does so in relation to divine infinity. From this perspective, itis argued that the root of the cosmological conflict lies in the tension with in the idea of the world between two aspects: on the one hand, the exterior character with which the relation of the conditioned to its condition is conceived; on the other, the demand for a complete series of conditions that apodictically justifies the conditioned, as required by a concept of reason. Finally, regarding the arguments of the Antinomy, it is argued that the thesis emphasizes the apodictic character, where as the antithesis accentuates the exterior one.
