This study seeks to understand how fathers from working-class backgrounds construct their fatherhood within a context marked by traditional gender roles and changes in the patriarchal structure. A qualitative approach with a phenomenological design was used, interviewing nine fathers from low socioeconomic backgrounds, aged between 31 and 59, who live with their partners and children. The findings show that fatherhood begins to be constructed before the experience of being fathers, influenced by the paternal model of their own parents and by a masculine gender identity based on traditional patterns. The role of provider is their main function, reinforced by the socioeconomic context and economic hardships. However, in their interactions with their partners and children, the initial model of fatherhood is adjusted. In addition to being providers, they value a close and participatory fatherhood. Through these interactions, they reconsider their initial model, identifying with their children and reconnecting with their own experiences. The partner influences the father– child relationship, either facilitating or limiting the exercise of fatherhood, and their presence in the home leads fathers to relinquish the role of provider and authority, incorporating domestic tasks, although some resistance remains.
