Bersabet (1999) adaptada por Ortega (2022) y Clinical Evaluation of Language
Fundamentals de Semel, Wiig y Secord (1997) adaptada por Huertas, Salas & Zapata
The present study aimed to determine the relationship between parenting styles and expressive language in 5-year-old children from an educational institution in southern Lima. The type of research was correlational and non-experimental in design. The sample consisted of 120 5-year-old children and their parents, through non-probabilistic sampling. The instruments used were the parenting practices questionnaire by Fuentes, Motrico & Bersabet (1999) adapted by Ortega (2022) and Clinical Evaluation of Language Fundamentals by Semel, Wiig and Secord (1997) adapted by Huertas, Salas & Zapata (210). The results highlighted a correlation between parenting styles and expressive language with an effect size of medium importance (V > .15). A significant relationship was also found between parenting styles and expressive language according to sex, with a practical significance of medium importance for boys (V > .15) and a large importance for girls (V > .25). Likewise, significant correlations were found between the study variables according to the caregivers' educational level. For caregivers with a complete secondary education, the importance was medium (V > .25), and for caregivers with incomplete secondary education, higher education, and technical education, the importance was high (V > .25). Finally, it was found that the predominant parenting style in 5-year-old children in the study was the permissive style, and 29.5% were at a borderline level in the development of expressive language and 28.5% were between a low and very low level.
