The main objective of this research is to compare the levels of mathematical competence of 5th grade elementary school students in private and public institutions in the district of San Juan de Miraflores. This study arises from the recent results obtained in the census evaluations of the mathematics area, which have revealed that many students face significant difficulties in understanding and solving mathematical problems. The research approach is quantitative correlational and has worked with a representative sample of 158 students, all of them in the age range of 9 to 10 years, from both private and public schools. The findings show a significant gap in academic performance between both groups, especially in the three competencies evaluated: Problem Solving, Calculation and Numeration. The results indicate that students from private institutions obtained a higher performance compared to their peers from public schools. To carry out this comparison, the standardized test CESPRO 4 was used, which specifically evaluates the three factors mentioned. This tool allows for a clear diagnosis of students' mathematical abilities and provides valuable information to identify areas requiring pedagogical intervention. In conclusion, the research not only highlights the differences in academic performance between types of educational institutions but also underlines the urgent need to implement effective strategies to improve the teaching and learning of mathematics in all educational contexts.
