Abstract
In this research work, intended to make a contribution that allows recovering the meaning of mathematics by finding a reason for being of knowledge about elementary functions. This is due to the fact that the official reason that appears in the last level of secondary education and the first cycle of university of this knowledge mostly responds to questions that limit the student to using formulas or a set of steps to get an answer, showing in isolation much of the knowledge of functions or related to them. For this reason, in this research, a problem is posed that allows the mathematical modeling process on the time of contagion by the virus (COVID-19). To do this, an activity is designed and implemented as a proposal for teaching and learning mathematics, based on a didactic device called a study and research path. This allowed the first cycle university students to develop an investigation from an initial question, which generated various derived questions, determining a teaching by research as the paradigm of questioning the world. For this, the mathematical organizations that emerged in the modeling process of the applied activity are studied by means of the degree of completeness indicators. The results were that only two of the seven completeness indicators were not met due to the rigidity in the use of ostensive and the scarce use of inverse tasks.
