Abstract
In Peru, violence against women (VAW) by an intimate partner is one of the most frequent forms of violence and of a broader impact upon women’s lifetime projects. This form of violence has been historically and culturally legitimized in all the subjective spaces women live in, with them being considered as inhabiting positions of “no agency” or “scarce agency” as a characteristic of womanhood. Nonetheless, agency is a rarely studied construct in all its depth in women battered by their intimate partners as a part of psychoanalytic theory or clinical practice. Hence, this research aims to study agency and its variations in a woman battered by her intimate partner in the context of her relational configurations as a part of brief psychoanalytic psychotherapy process. The results of this study show multiple agency modalities in the consultant since the beginning of the psychotherapeutic process, besides of a development of her agency towards the end of the process. Moreover, brief relational psychoanalytic psychotherapy is proposed as a space for the elaboration of traumatic experiences in women battered by their intimate partners. This type of space could promote a development of agency in the consultants in the form of a “devolution” of their places as subjects and agents by virtue of mutual recognition. Keywords: agency, violence against women, gender, relational configuration, brief psychoanalytic psychotherapy, relational psychotherapy
