resistencia, afecto y sentido colectivo.
This research explores the social construction of suffering among rural youth in Paucartambo, Cusco, from a sociological perspective on emotions. The study is based on the premise that emotions are not individual phenomena but collective experiences shaped within specific cultural and historical contexts. Using the concept of “social suffering”, it analyzes the discourses, practices, and representations of sadness among eleven fifth-year high school students from Serapio Calderón Lazo y Vega School. Through a qualitative and ethnographic approach, participatory techniques such as semi-structured interviews, daily routine descriptions, and drawings about life expectations were employed. The findings reveal that suffering among Paucartambo’s youth is linked to structural factors such as inequality, early responsibilities, and economic limitations, but also to strong relationships with family, community, and the land. Three central dimensions emerge: the representation of life stages, the construction of symbolic territories, and the experience of fatigue as a daily expression of suffering. Overall, the research argues that sadness in country sides contexts should not be understood as a passive emotion but as a mode of relating to the social world that embodies resistance, affection, and collective meaning.
