Abstract
Battered men are representatives by excellence of the conjunction between violence and masculinity, which opens the question about the possibilities of change and displacement. Within this framework, this research explores how some battered men, after a reeducational process, (re)build their masculinity. To this end, 10 men who participated in the reeducational program of the Institutional Attention Center against Family Violence (CAI-Breña) were interviewed. These men were sentenced judicially and ordered to attend the program, after which they reported favorable progress. Using a qualitative methodology, their experiences are analyzed before and after the reeducative process through in-depth interviews and the review of their oficial records. For the purpose of analysis, three scopes of masculinity were established: 1) violence towards the couple, 2) male performativity, and 3) emotion management. The results show that men in their daily practices question hegemonic masculinity and the use of violence, even when contradictions and tensions arise. In particular, it is observed that they reduce their exercise of violence and stablished more respectful relationships, although with a tendency to retain power (real or imaginary). In addition, they perform their masculinity from the affects and the involvement in the domestic labor; and finally try to manage their emotions by taking responsability over them and avoiding hostile extrojection.
