Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between the reported areas of posttraumatic growth and the emotional regulation strategies used after a couple breakup in a group of young undergraduate students in universities of Metropolitan Lima. The sample consisted of 124 participants, 79 women (63.7%) and 45 men (36.3%), whose age range was 18-26 years, with an average age of 21.20 years (SD = 2.28), who would have gone through a couple breakup in the last 2 years. The instruments used were the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI) and the Emotional Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ) adapted for Peru. A significant relationship was found between posttraumatic growth, as well as in its three areas, and the cognitive reappraisal strategy, while the relationship between PTG and the suppression strategy was non-significant. Furthermore, a low correlation was found between age and cognitive reappraisal. On the other hand, no significant differences were found in the perception of PTG according to the variables of the breakup’s context. Thus, further research is suggested regarding emotional regulation as an element related to the perception of posttraumatic growth.
