Abstract
The purpose of the study was to demonstrate that the development and application of the “Matemathik” program increases the level of mathematical competence in five-year-old children from a private school in Lurigancho-Chosica. This is an explanatory, experimental research developed under a quasi-experimental design in a sample of 36 students, belonging to two classrooms of initial 5 years that make up the control group and the experimental group. The “Matemathik” program was developed, which consists of 28 sessions and lasted 3 months. To collect the data, the Early Mathematical Assessment Test (TEMT) was used in the version adapted to Lima by Cruz and Chahua (2019). The results indicate that the Wilcoxon value (Z = -3.624; p = 0.000), obtained in early mathematical competence between the pretest and posttest evaluations, is statistically significant at the level of p<0.01; it was observed that in 100% of the children the post-test scores were higher than those of the pre-test. Likewise, the value of the Mann-Whitney U calculated in the mean scores in the early mathematical competence in the post-test (U = 14.000; p = 0.000), between children in the experimental and control groups, is statistically significant at the level of p<0.01, with the average range being favorable to the children participating in the experimental group. It was concluded that the application of the “Matemathik” program significantly increases the level of general early mathematical competence and in each of its components in 5-year-old children of a private school in Lurigancho-Chosica.
