Abstract
This study analyzed the characteristics of linguistic transfers of female students in a bilingual school whose ages ranged between seven and nine years old. The goal was to detect what phonetic-phonological and morphosyntactic errors the students made during the process of acquisition of a second language: English. To determine the characteristics of these errors or linguistic transfers, reading and writing tests were designed in order to evaluate the oral and written production. The results showed that linguistic transfers are evident in both components. The phonetic and phonological component registered greater percentage of error. Nevertheless, not all the students transferred sounds of their native language to a second language, and major sound errors in English are not necessarily the ones that are absent in the Spanish phonetic system. A bilingual educational context might help to reduce such transfers that second-language learners tend to produce.
