The objective of this study was to understand the experiences of masculinity in participants of a re-educational program in their experiences of gender socialization and its relation with current intimate partner violence. To do so, 4 men, aged between 34 and 43 years, convicted of violence against their partners, participated in a semi-structured interview. The results highlighted the experiences in parental relationships, analyzing the dichotomy between similar experiences of poor emotional connection or absence of fathers and the significant support perceived from mothers despite the violence exercised. In addition, similar violent experiences were analyzed in educational and community relationships that, driven by social pressure and the search for peer validation, reinforce homophobia and the constant need to show virility. Also, in the process of learning about sexuality, recurrent experiences that glorify male promiscuity and denigrate sexually active women were highlighted. In the case of public sexual harassment, experiential regularities that naturalize such behaviors for being men were analyzed and are seen as games between peers. Although they experienced learning during the re-education process, deeply rooted hegemonic beliefs remained, but also some beliefs, behaviors and emotional management are being reprogrammed by learning new ways of relating and resolving conflicts. The diversity of experiences underlines the complexity of the phenomenon and highlights the need for interdisciplinary and preventive approaches.
