hijos.
The objective of this research is to know the social representations (SR) about motherhood in a group of mothers deprived of liberty. For this, a qualitative research was carried out with a socio-constructivist epistemological framework. The participants were made up of 6 mothers deprived of liberty aged between 33 and 37 years (M = 36.2; SD = 1.3), whose children are between 4 and 17 years old (M = 12.9; SD = 3.9). In order to explore their perspectives, semistructured interviews were conducted. Among the main results, first, it was found that the maternity SR of this group of mothers are homogeneous with general maternity. That is, they have internalized the information obtained regarding gender roles and hegemonic patterns of motherhood established by the patriarchal system and Catholicism. Second, it was identified that the participants have a positive attitude towards motherhood, which is reflected in feelings of joy and happiness for being mothers. Third, it was found that the situation of incarceration has led to a restructuring in the representational field of these SRs, which is evidenced in the revaluation of their maternal priorities and the exacerbation of the beliefs about motherhood that they had prior to their entry into the penitentiary establishment. Finally, it was found that incarceration has had a significant emotional impact on this population, which manifests itself in feelings of guilt, sadness, helplessness, pain and suffering due to the physical separation of children.
