Espacios de actividad y difusión musical en Lima: el Teatro Municipal y el Teatro Forero, 1909 - 1929

Abstract

Durante los primeros años del siglo XX, el Perú retomó la senda de la modernización orientada a la renovación urbana y la apertura de nuevos espacios de sociabilidad y diversión que había quedado interrumpida por la guerra del Pacífico, todo ello organizado y dirigido por una élite oligárquica. En este contexto, la idealización de una Lima moderna va acorde con muchos aspectos, uno de ellos se relaciona con la calidad de la oferta artística que se encuentra en la ciudad, en este caso es el del teatro musical. De este modo, teatros como el Municipal y el Forero serán restaurados hacia los años de 1909 y 1920, respectivamente, con el fin de dotar a la capital de modernos recintos artísticos para la representación de óperas, zarzuelas, entre otros. De esta manera, la presente investigación tiene como objetivo abordar el estudio de la actividad musical de los teatros Municipal y Forero en diálogo con su contexto espacio temporal, es decir, la ciudad de Lima, en pleno proceso de modernización, durante los años 1909 y 1929. Para este fin, se ha hecho uso de un diseño teórico y metodológico mixto, centrando la teoría en conceptos como modernización, espacios de difusión, paisajes sonoros, ciudad sonora y otros pertenecientes a la musicología urbana histórica, mientras que, metodológicamente, se ha recurrido a la búsqueda y análisis de fuentes documentales de la época. Por último, la investigación se orienta a mostrar aspectos de la ciudad de Lima tales como las redes comerciales relativas a la actividad musical y el teatro durante los años 1909 y 1929 tomando como epicentro a los teatros Municipal y Forero.

During the first years of the 20th century, Peru returned to the path of modernity directed towards urban renewal and the opening of new public spaces for sociability and fun and an attempt to insert Peru into Western culture following a European standard; both of them organized and directed by an oligarchic elite. In this context, the idealization of a modern Lima is consistent with many aspects, one of them is the quality of the art that can be consumed within the city, that in this case is the musical theater. Thereby, theaters such as the Municipal and the Forero were rebuilt by 1909 and 1920, respectively; in order to provide the capital with modern artistic places for the performance of operas, zarzuelas, skits, among others. That is why this research aims to address the study of the musical activity of the Municipal and Forero theaters in dialogue with their space-time context; that is, the city of Lima and modernity, during the years 1909 and 1929. For this purpose, a mixed theoretical and methodological design has been used; focusing the theory on concepts such as modernity, musical diffusion spaces, soundscapes, sound city and urban historical musicology as well; while methodologically, the search and analysis of historical documentary sources has been used. In this way, this research is oriented to show aspects of the city of Lima such as commercial networks related to musical activity and theater during the years 1909 and 1929 taking as epicenter the Municipal and Forero theaters.
