Abstract
Objectives: To describe the characteristics of speech in children aged 8-12 years with a cleft lip and palate who go to a specialty care center in the city of Lima to find the frequency of omissions, substitutions, distortions and inaccuracies that occur during their speeches. Method: For data collection the MBGR (Review Orofacial Myofunctional) protocol was used, the speech area. With this instrument, verbal productions of children allowed to characterize their speech by the perceptual auditory test. Results: The analysis of the data found that children's speech was intelligible, but with frequent manifestations of articulation errors: omissions (80%), substitutions (15%) and omissions (30%). No cases were found with inaccurate articulation. In the analysis, it was also observed that most distorted sounds during verbal productions of children with cleft lip and palate are [r] and [s], and sounds are altered mainly due to anatomical and functional characteristics. Conclusion: The speech of children with cleft lip and palate, even after being surgically intervened, is characterized by distortions and omissions of sounds that need lingopalatal contacts for their production. These problems are associated with the functional anatomical characteristics.
