Abstract
The objective of the present investigation called Index of Social Progress, IPS, of the province of San Marcos, belonging to the department of Cajamarca, in Peru; seeks to verify the development obtained by the population of said province, with respect to the following three dimensions: Basic Needs, Fundamentals of Welfare and Opportunities, which are explained through twelve components. This makes it possible to identify the main areas of action, of intervention through public policies, in which public and private sector entities can focus on improving the quality of life of the communities where they operate. The research has a quantitative approach that seeks to find the results of the IPS, based on the collection of data through a questionnaire survey provided by Social Progress Imperative and Catholic CENTRUM, applied to heads of families in the province, the same applied in its seven districts. The processing of this information was done through the programs MS Excel 2016, IBM SPSS Statistics version 24.0 and Stata MP14, in order to check the reliability of the instrument the Alpha of Cronbach statistic was applied and to guarantee the internal coherence the KMO test, which served to make a proper calculation of the IPS of the province. The results obtained show, for the province of San Marcos, an IPS of 40.57 that placed it at a Very Low level, it was also demonstrated that the components: Health and Wellbeing are located in a High Medium level, which implies the need to improve in the analyzed components of the other dimensions due to having low levels and very low. These IPS of the province of San Marcos should be the input priority for local, regional and national authorities to allocate the necessary resources to overcome the weaknesses shown for the benefit of the population.
