This research aims to examine how contemporary artistic practices in public spaces can become tools to foster empathy and strengthen the culture of human rights in diverse social contexts. This research stems from the need to understand that human rights do not only belong to a legal field, but must be understood and internalized by everyone to become a collective commitment to strengthening a culture of peace. But how can we move from a legal understanding to a sensitive understanding of such complex concepts? The research focuses on examining how various artistic interventions in public spaces articulate the legal field and the recognition of human rights by using a symbolic language that helps people understand that these rights are shared by all human beings and, consequently, must be defended by all. To this end, the importance of fostering empathy through art in public spaces for the promotion of human rights is first raised. The focus is then placed on a review and analysis of various artistic interventions from different parts of the world that address issues such as forced migration, gender-based violence, and enforced disappearance, in dialogue with international legal instruments that protect human rights. Finally, artistic interventions in Peru are examined, integrating the perspectives of local artists with the human rights movement during the internal armed conflict, addressing serious human rights violations and the need to search for truth and build a memory that articulates the voices of artists and victims.
