Abstract

The sample was constituted of 91 newborns from the "San Bartolomé" Hospital, in August of 2016, who received exclusive breastfeeding and did not present risk at birth. For the collection of information, the observation technique was used and as an instrument an observation sheet. Among the results, was obtained 87% of the babies presented adequate suction, of which the most successful items were those related to maternal anatomy (93%), baby responses (88%) and emotional attachment, together with Suction (87%). It is concluded that effective sucking was favored by: the anatomy of the mother's breasts, the emotional bond and the baby's response to suction. Among the criteria that influenced a possible difficulty is: the position of the body and aspects of suction.
