Abstract
somos a qué somos.
The concept of identity has been worked on a lot in Arendt’s work, and there is much we can say about it without ambiguity. For example, we know that we can only understand who someone is through their actions or the stories those actions narrate. We also know that we cannot describe identity with adjectives, as we would end up reducing “who” we are to “what” we are. However, we do not know what it is, since Arendt does not offer a precise definition of it. The general objective of this work is to provide a definition of what Arendt calls identity. The work begins by reflecting on the world, on its importance to Arendt’s work, and pointing out that the concept of action can only be understood unitarily if its relationship with the world is taken into account. Then, considering the relationships between identity and the world, and a series of quotes about identity present in Arendt’s work, we present criteria that a definition of identity must meet. From these criteria, it is concluded that identity is the space we occupy in the world, a space which is updated and made observable through action.
