The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between maternal separation anxiety (MSA) and social competence (SC) in preschool children from the city of Tarma, within the post-pandemic context. It also examined the association between MSA and sociodemographic variables such as socioeconomic status, maternal education, and the child’s sex and age, as well as the relationship between SC and behavioral problems with the child’s sex, age, and the mother’s number of children. This quantitative study used a cross-sectional design and included 94 mother–child dyads between 37 and 71 months of age. MSA was assessed with the MSAS completed by the mothers, while SC and behavioral problems were measured with the SCBE- 30 completed by 14 teachers from the educational institution. Overall, results showed no significant relationship between MSA and SC, nor between MSA and behavioral problems. However, the findings suggest that MSA does not have a linear effect on SC, but that its effects depend on contextual factors, providing evidence to better understand the complexity of socioemotional development in early childhood.
