Relación ética entre asco proyectivo e imaginación empática en la teoría cognitivo-evaluativa de las emociones de Martha Nussbaum. Algunas consecuencias políticas para la democracia

Abstract

La presente investigación explora la relación ética entre asco proyectivo e imaginación empática o narrativa en la teoría neoestoica de las emociones de Martha Nussbaum, con el objetivo de determinar su estructura cognitiva, el papel tóxico del miedo, aunque también sus ventajas y la constelación de otras emociones negativas que se dan cita en su configuración. Al mismo tiempo, describe la falacia del asco proyectivo que niega la vulnerabilidad desconociendo que nos hace humanos y la interpreta como imperfección, debilidad e impureza para proyectarla sobre ciertas personas y poblaciones a quienes estigmatiza, somete y margina desde una posición de poder. De esta manera, las declara repugnantes y justifica su rechazo. En ese sentido, una de las conclusiones principales es que, al ser el asco una negación de la propia humanidad es posible desactivarlo mediante la práctica de la imaginación empática que, por un lado, promueve la esperanza política y el intercambio narrativo entre los vulnerables y, al mismo tiempo, es impulsada por ella. La otra idea que deriva de la anterior es que la relación entre la imaginación empática (también llamada visión imaginativa) y la esperanza política es un ejercicio ético que, por medio del autoexamen y el pensamiento crítico, el debate de argumentos y el cultivo de las artes y la literatura, la educación, entre otros, tiene el potencial de promover la epoché o suspensión del juicio para esperar activamente la manifestación del otro y apostar contra todo pronóstico en la posibilidad de reconstruir positivamente los vínculos humanos que el asco proyectivo cortó. El objetivo de esta práctica es establecer nuevas relaciones, precisamente, mediante el intercambio de las vulnerabilidades en espacios políticos seguros que tienen el propósito de impulsar el desarrollo de capacidades y la inclusión. La hermenéutica del sentido como acercamiento metodológico, facilita la reinterpretación de los aspectos negativos del miedo y de la vulnerabilidad, recolocándolos para ello en el contexto de aceptación y revaloración de la condición humana, misma que incluye estas condiciones primordiales que no pueden sin más desconocerse o eyectar de nuestra experiencia humana. La esperanza política es una auténtica emoción activa que fomenta procesos formativos para humanizar las relaciones y posibilitar la construcción de una ciudadanía empática, igualitaria y justa, una ciudadanía democrática que no sólo requiere de crecimiento económico, sino también de amor y empatía.

This research explores the ethical relation between projective disgust and empathetic or narrative imagination in Martha Nussbaum’s neo-Stoic theory of emotions. Its aim is to determine their cognitive structure, to analyze the toxic role of fear—while also acknowledging its benefits—and to map the constellation of other negative emotions that take part in their configuration. At the same time, it describes the fallacy of projective disgust, which denies vulnerability, failing to recognize it as constitutive of our humanity; it interprets vulnerability as imperfection, weakness, and impurity, and then projects it onto certain persons and populations who, from a position of power, are stigmatized, subdued, and marginalized. In this way, they are declared repugnant and their exclusion is rationalized. One principal conclusion is that, since disgust entails a denial of one’s own humanity, it can be deactivated through the practice of empathetic imagination which, on the one hand, promotes political hope and narrative exchange among the vulnerable and, at the same time, is itself energized by that hope. A further claim is that the relation between empathetic (or imaginative) vision and political hope constitutes an ethical exercise which—through self-examination and critical thinking, the debate of arguments, and the cultivation of the arts, literature, and education, among other practices—has the potential to foster epoché (the suspension of judgment) in order to wait attentively for the other’s manifestation and to wager—against the odds—on the possibility of positively rebuilding the human bonds that projective disgust has severed. The goal of this practice is to establish new relations precisely by sharing vulnerabilities within safe political spaces designed to advance capability development and inclusion. Adopting a hermeneutics of meaning as methodological approach facilitates the reinterpretation of the negative aspects of fear and vulnerability, relocating them within a context that affirms and re-values the human condition—one that necessarily includes these primordial conditions and cannot simply deny or eject them from our experience. Political hope is a genuinely active emotion that fosters formative processes to humanize relationships and make possible the construction of an empathetic, egalitarian, and just democratic citizenship—a citizenship that requires not only economic growth but also love and empathy.
