The distribution of caregiving and domestic work responsibilities still largely falls primarily on women in Peru, and gender roles and stereotypes permeate the meanings and practice of fatherhood. In this context, paternity leave can be an element that reinforces these inequalities or that contributes to promoting co-responsibility in care. Therefore, this research sought to understand the experience of fathers who used the four-day paternity leave, capturing the meanings, roles, emotional experiences, and lessons learned during its use. The study was developed from community psychology and the critical construction and transformation paradigm, with a qualitative approach and a phenomenological design. A focus group and semi-structured interviews were conducted with fathers from a company in Metropolitan Lima, identified through the Red Peruana de Masculinidades (RPMASC), a group that played a key role in the research. The results were generated through thematic analysis. The results show that paternity leave is useful and necessary, and that the exercise of fatherhood during this period can take place from a position of help or of involvement. It is recognized that the leave opens opportunities to transform gender roles, but it needs to be strengthened as a public policy in conjunction with other measures related to gender equality. It is recommended to extend its duration, incorporate awareness-raising components, and civil society be involved in this process.
