Abstract
This study seeks to identify and describe the mathematical knowledge held by Shipibo-Konibo children of the Ucayali region, in Peru, when solving addition, subtraction and multiplication problems, and also problems involving the concept of “half”. These operations were assessed through the “clinical – critic” method of Jean Piaget, using concrete material and culturally contextualized problems. Additionally, a traditional written, pencil and paper test, was used to evaluate addition, subtraction and the notion of “half”. The results show some difficulties in the development of the four mathematical skills; however, better results were obtained through qualitative, piagetian assessment, in contrast to the quantitative, pencil and paper assessment. Developmental levels for addition, subtraction, multiplication and the concept of “half” were identified, which are consistent with Piagetian theory. The results are discussed using Piaget’s theory, and critically analyzing the needs of intercultural bilingual education in the Ucayali region of Peru.
