Abstract
This research investigates the relationship between drug use and risk perception of drug use, as well as the relationship between drug use and coping among military personnel. 87 male troop members participated in this study. They were hospitalized mainly because of traumatologic problems (61.2%); their average age was 21 years old and 62.1% finished school without starting college. They were anonymously administered measures of drug use, risk perception of drug use and coping strategies. Correlational analyses indicated that drug use is related to coping, but no to risk perception of drug use. Drug use strategy is related to the consumption of almost all drugs in this study. Other coping strategies also relate to drug use. Possible explanations for these findings are discussed. The results of this research can be used to help design health promotion and prevention programs in order to reduce drugs use among troop members.
