Abstract
Recent studies on Peru`s political culture shows low levels of political tolerance and political support, while the levels of public protest and authoritarian values have increased (Carrión y Zárate, 2010, 2012). The present study explores the relationship between Right Wing Authoritarianism (RWA, Altemeyer, 1988), potential repression, legitimacy of the claim, legitimacy of public protest and non-conventional political participation, in a Peruvian representative sample (N=1203) at geographical area level: Lima- Callao, Urban-interior and Rural-interior. The results suggest that the structural conditions of the area would have influence on the ambivalent behavior presented by the RWA: In Lima-Callao, the RWA is negatively related to the legitimacy of the public protest; on the other side, in Rural interior, the RWA is positively related to the legitimacy of public protest and non-conventional political participation, being mediated by the legitimacy of the claim.
