The main objective of this study was to explore the relationship between basic psychological need (BPN) satisfaction and frustration, passion types (harmonious and obsessive), subjective vitality and negative affect derived from the experience of playing Pokémon GO in adults. Additionally, the psychometric properties of the instruments used to measure the study variables (Basic Psychological Need Satisfaction and Frustration Scale, the Passion Scale, the Subjective Vitality Scale, and the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule) were evaluated, finding adequate evidence of validity and reliability. Among the main findings, BPN satisfaction was positively associated to harmonious passion (r = .56, p < .01) and subjective vitality (r = .48, p < .01), and negatively to NPB frustration (r = -.30, p < .01), obsessive passion (r = -17, p < .01) and negative affect (r = -.29, p <.01). Conversely, BPN frustration was positively associated to obsessive passion (r = .41, p < .01) and negative affect (r = .45, p < .01), and negatively to harmonious passion (r = -. 14, p < .05) and subjective vitality (r = .19, p < .01). Furthermore, harmonious passion was positively associated to subjective vitality (r = .53, p < .01), and obsessive passion to negative affect (r = .44, p < .01). A path analysis allowed us to identify that the relationship between BPN satisfaction and subjective vitality was partially mediated by harmonious passion, and that the relationship between BPN frustration and negative affect was partially mediated by obsessive passion. These findings are discussed in the light of Self-Determination Theory, the Dualistic Model of Passion, and the integration of both.
