Abstract
This investigation intended to study the relationship between loneliness, personality traits and social media addiction in university students in Metropolitan Lima. The Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale (Andreassen et al., 2012), the NEO-FFI Personality Inventory, a reduced version of the NEO PI R by Costa and McCrae (1989) and the De Jong Gierveld Loneliness Scale (De Jong Gierveld and Kamphuis, 1985) were used. The sample was composed of 177 university students (41.8% women and 58.2% men) between 18 and 25 years old. Regarding the results, significant correlations were found between the three study variables. In this way, a significant correlation was found between addiction to social networks and neuroticism, and inverse correlations with extraversion, agreeableness and conscientiousness. Regarding loneliness, a significant correlation was found between addiction to social networks and neuroticism, and inverse correlations with extraversion and agreeableness. In addition, the specific objective was to explore the differences in personality traits, addiction to social networks and loneliness according to the sex of the participants. Statistically significant differences were found in the levels of addiction to social networks and neuroticism, with women scoring higher than men.
