This research analyzes how the features of Andean theatricality are configured in the case of the tunantada, a satirical and emblematic dance of the city of Jauja, whose central celebration takes place on January 20, Date of the National Tunantada Competition, in which different tunantada associations from various locations participate. The thesis focuses on the performatic events developed in the surroundings of Plaza Monumental Juan Bolívar Crespo – 20 de Enero, based on the analysis of pukllay (theatrical play) and saynata (masking) within the tunantada, drawing on the theoretical contributions of Miguel Rubio (2009, 2022) and Alfonsina Barrionuevo (cited in Rubio, 2009). From a qualitative approach, the performatic events corresponding to January 20, 2024 are studied through bibliographic review, audiovisual recordings, and semi-structured interviews. The analysis shows that pukllay allows performers to create a character from their own personalities, opening the way for diverse nuances among those who portray the same character; meanwhile, saynata establishes a symbolic bond between the dance and the performer. The research concludes that the tunantada incorporates elements of Andean theatricality rooted in the very own community; these elements enrich performer creation and promote a more inclusive perspective of the performing arts in Peru.
