This study examines the media construction of Gianluca Lapadula’s image as a national idol in Peruvian sports newspapers during the 2021 Copa América. The research focuses on the news coverage produced by Depor and Líbero, in a context characterized by the high visibility of national team football and the emergence of new figures within the national imaginary. The main objective is to analyze how both media outlets constructed Lapadula as a national idol throughout the tournament. A qualitative approach based on content analysis is adopted, applied to a corpus of front pages and articles published during the competition. The analysis is structured around dimensions and indicators designed to identify journalistic strategies, rhetorical resources, and media frames associated with the representation of the player. The findings show that Depor and Líbero granted Lapadula sustained narrative centrality, associating him with values such as sacrifice, dedication, and commitment to the national team. Likewise, the frames reveal a re-signification of his status as a naturalized footballer, symbolically integrating him into the collective “we” through discourses of belonging and national identification. This media construction goes beyond sporting performance and positions the player as a symbolic reference within a nationalist narrative articulated by the press. It is concluded that the Peruvian sports press played an active role in shaping Gianluca Lapadula’s image as a national idol during the 2021 Copa América, producing narratives that link football with processes of identity and nationalism. The study contributes to the field of communication by providing empirical evidence on the use of media framing in the construction of emblematic figures in contemporary Peruvian sports journalism.
