Abstract
The aim of this study was to identify the association between stress reactions and coping in institutionalized adolescents former abusers of psychoactive substances. A group of 35 currently institutionalized adolescents aged between 12 and 17 years old (M = 14.14 years, SD = 1.46) were assessed using the Adolescent Coping Scale – Lima (ACS Lima) and the Stress Reactions Inventory (IREA). Significant correlations between physiological, cognitive, emotional and global stress reactions with coping strategies such as not coping, self-blame, physical distraction and work hard and achieve were found. Also, significant differences by gender in physiological, cognitive and emotional stress reactions, overall stress and coping strategy self-blame, were higher in women than men. In contrast, men used coping strategies like physical recreation and ignore the problem more than women.
