Abstract
The aim of this study was to describe the attitudes towards the environment of a group of people from ten neighborhoods adjacent to the Villa Wetlands from two perspectives: the emic measurement and the scale of environmental concerns. The measurement consisted of two phases: the qualitative phase, where twenty semi-structured interviews were conducted from which a five section emic scale was developed, and the second phase where the emic scale and the scale of environmental concerns were applied to a sample of four hundred and ten people. The attitudes towards the environment of the participants consist of the perception about the benefits it brings to human beings but is currently suffering a period of problems. People are identified as guilty of environmental problems, but the authorities are perceived as responsible for caring for the environment and encouraging people to take part of it. The investigation also shows how statistically significant differences exist in attitudes towards the environment according to a series of socio-demographic variables.
