Abstract
The general objective of this research is to analyze the effect of learning musical notation, in this case sheet music and tablature, on the engagement and performance of primary school students in a basic acoustic guitar course at a school in Cusco. Thus, the effect that 7 learning sessions had on a sample of 92 students who were learning to play the guitar for the first time and where sheet music and tablature were used as languages to play the instrument was analyzed. The study presents a mixed factorial quasi-experimental design, the independent variables being score and tablature as musical notation conditions and pre and post-tests as time conditions. The dependent variables are the construct of engagement and performance. The results of the two-way mixed ANOVA indicate, in the case of engagement, that the hypothesis that tablature, unlike sheet music, increases student engagement was not fulfilled. In the case of performance, the hypothesis that tablature increases the performance of guitar students in contrast to its counterpart, sheet music, was fulfilled. From this, the results are discussed based in theoretical and empirical research on engagement and performance. In the final part of this research, some recommendations are indicated for the further study of both constructs within the framework of teaching the guitar.
