Abstract
The present study explores teachers´ beliefs about Intercultural Education in a private college institution. A qualitative study was designed were six teachers of freshman classes (three of science classes and three of humanity classes) were interviewed. The interviews explored beliefs about culture, cultural diversity, interculturality, Intercultural Education (IE), its role in higher education and the teaching practices it implies. The information gathered was analyzed through a conventional thematic analysis. Results show that teachers hold very different beliefs regarding the relevance of IE in higher education; still, all participants believe in the relevance of intercultural teaching practices. This can be explained due to teachers lack of recognition of intercultural classroom situations as such, thus they understand teaching practices required to handle them as part of the ordinary. Implications of these results and recommendations for future investigations are discussed.
