Abstract
Recuay.
The evangelization and extirpation of idolatry configured one of the main strategies promoted by the Spanish crown for the religious domination of the Andean settler and its sacred landscape. In this context, this thesis defines the processes of the Christianization of the symbolic landscape of Sector 1 of Pueblo Viejo de Recuay during the Early Colonial Period. As part of the investigation, the character of the colonial occupation in the Ushnu type Inca Ceremonial Platform of Pueblo Viejo de Recuay and the Colonial Church was determined through archaeological excavations and the study of reported objects. Subsequently, the archaeological data were complemented with the references obtained through the studies of colonial historical sources about Pueblo Viejo de Recuay and the Callejón de Huaylas. The results suggest that the process of evangelization of the sacred landscape of Pueblo Viejo de Recuay began with the closing of the Ushnu and the leveling of the upper platform. After that, the evangelizers built a rectangular enclosure on top of the platform already leveled and a Colonial Church in a square located in the southwest of the Ushnu. Finally, the extirpation of idolatry in Recuay carried out by Rodrigo Hernández Príncipe in 1620 ended the process of evangelization of this Andean space. In summary, the mentioned data demonstrate the Catholic religious imposition through strategies developed for the destruction and evangelization of the symbolic landscape of Sector 1 of Pueblo Viejo de Recuay.
