Abstract
afrontamiento negación (r=.37, p=.01), y enfocar y liberar emociones (r=.28, p=.04).
The purpose of the study was to describe the correlations between coping strategies and dispositional optimism in a sample of 51 women patients with breast cancer, between the ages of 30 and 65 years (M=53.25, SD=8.60) who received ambulatory attention in a specialized oncological public Institution in Lima. The instruments used included the COPE Inventory, created by Carver, Scheier and Weintraub (1989) and adapted by Cassaretto and Chau (2016); and the Life Orientation Test-Revised (LOT-R) inventory of Scheier, Carver and Bridges (1994), in the Spanish version of Otero, Luengo, Romero, Gómez and Castro (1998) and adapted by Oliden (2013) in Peruvian context. The results show significant and direct correlation between optimism and coping strategies denial (r=.37, p=.01), and focus and release emotions (r=.28, p=.04). Likewise, we found a significant and direct correlation between the time elapsed since diagnosis and the coping strategy planning (r=.32, p=.02). This research analyzes the possible explanations for the findings, contributing to the importance of studying psychological factors involved in the ways women with breast cancer deal with the disease.
