Abstract
This research explores the relations between cognitive load, group interaction processes (coordination, communication and metacognitive activities), and the learning outcomes (group and individual) in a higher education collaborative learning class. A questionnaire was administrated to 57 undergraduate students (men and women between 17 and 29 years old, M = 19.39), who were asked to solve a group task as part of class activities during two academic hours. This questionnaire measured cognitive load and group interaction. In addition, students’ grades for the group task and an individual quiz made by the professor were collected. There were no relations between the studied variables. Nevertheless, significant differences were found in task difficulty perception, group coordination and communication among students who felt comfortable participating in a collaborative class and the ones who did not. Also, the disposition to interact correlated positively with coordination (r = .449, p < .01), communication (r = .484, p < .01) and the use of metacognitive strategies (r = .506, p < .01). Concerning the interaction processes, group communication correlated negatively with task difficulty perception (r = -.441, p < .01). These findings and the limitations, scope and possibilities about this methodological approach to study collaborative learning in higher education are discussed.
