Soporte social y sentido de coherencia en estudiantes universitarios

Abstract

El presente estudio buscó conocer la relación entre el soporte social y el sentido de coherencia en un grupo de estudiantes universitarios. Asimismo, tuvo como objetivo secundario identificar la existencia de diferencias significativas en el sentido de coherencia y el soporte social (y sus tipos, en términos del soporte recibido y el grado de satisfacción con el mismo) según variables demográficas. Los participantes fueron 185 estudiantes universitarios, hombres y mujeres, de los primeros años de una universidad privada de Lima. Sus edades oscilaban entre 16 y 22 años (M = 17.9 años, DE = 1.16) y pertenecían a dos facultades, una asociada a carreras de letras y otra asociada a ciencias. Para la medición se utilizaron los Cuestionarios de Transacciones de Soporte Social (CTSS; Suurmeijer et al., 1995) y Satisfacción de Soporte Social (CSSS; Doeglas et al., 1996), y la versión reducida del Cuestionario de Orientación hacia la Vida (SOC-13; Antonovsky, 1987). Como resultado, se hallaron correlaciones entre el sentido de coherencia y el soporte social, siendo la relación más fuerte con la satisfacción del soporte social (r = .38; p < .01) que con el soporte social recibido (r = .20; p < .01). Además, se hallaron diferencias significativas en el sentido de coherencia y sus áreas según la variable demográfica lugar de procedencia. También, entre el sentido de coherencia y sentido emocional a la vida según el tiempo de residencia en Lima. Por otro lado, se encontraron diferencias significativas en el soporte social recibido, y algunas de sus áreas, según la variable sexo.

The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between social support and sense of coherence in college students. A secondary objective was to identify the existence of significant differences in sense of coherence and social support (in terms of received social support and the degree of satisfaction with it) according to demographic variables. The participants were 185 university students, men and women, in their early years of study in a private university in Lima. Their ages ranged from 16 to 22 years (M = 17.9 years, SD = 1.16) and they belonged to two faculties, one associated with letters careers and the other one associated with science careers. The instruments used were Social Support Questionnaire for Transactions (SSQT; Suurmeijer et al., 1995), Social Support Questionnaire for Satisfaction with the Supportive Transaction (SSQS, Doeglas et al., 1996) and the Orientation of Life Questionnaire, reduced version (OLQ-13; Antonovsky, 1987). Results showed correlations between sense of coherence and social support, where a stronger relationship with social support satisfaction (r = .38; p < .01) than received social support (r = .20; p < .01) was found. Furthermore, significant differences were found in sense of coherence and their areas according to the demographic variable place of origin. Also, between sense of coherence and meaningfulness according to the residence time in Lima. Furthermore, significant differences were found in received social support and some of its areas according to the gender variable.
