The main aim of this research is to give an account of the identity that Jose Maria Arguedas - the writer, ethnographer, anthropologist and musician-, represents in the content of his epistolary and diaristic to outline his displacements between the social sciences and literature. We are interested in highlighting the voice of the enunciator who emerges as the autodiegetic narrator of the autobiographical documents, to achieve this task, we will focus on the epistolary collection from the hermeneutical point of view to identify that in the base and aesthetic structure. The language of Arguedas is anchored to his inter-subjective and affective relationships that took place in his childhood and that irremediably marked his world of passions, as is visible in the epistolary collection in which Arguedas, through a process of continuous internal focalisation and self-representation, orients his specific purposes towards each addressee and the personal academic or work relationships that he sustains. More from the epistolary collection and the seventeen diary entries from 1938 and 1966, we will try to highlight the importance of the autobiographical documents in his literary writing and as a social scientist, demonstrating that rather than a suicidal writer – as some critics claim- Arguedas is an important and innovative writer as well as a social scientist of great solidity whose vital purpose was to preserve the memory of the Andean universe by making social and cultural differences visible, in order to claim equality and social justice in a parallel and substantial way.
