El smartphone y el uso de WhatsApp en un contexto de migración

Abstract

El smartphone es un objeto que ha transformado la comunicación entre las personas, las maneras en que socializan y cómo acceden a información para tomar decisiones que les ayude a transitar la vida. El valor de uso que le asigna cada persona al smartphone va tomando diferentes formas y se generan brechas, ya sea por el acceso a la tecnología o por la prestación (affordance) que se da en el momento de poner las cualidades del smartphone como objeto con las habilidades de las personas que los usan. Este objeto facilita una multi co-presencia a través de la cual una persona puede estar, desde la virtualidad que permite el internet, en muchos lugares diferentes y con personas distintas a la vez. Estas posibilidades son clave para las personas migrantes, ya que posibilitan el mantenimiento y la redefinición de vínculos familiares, a la vez que facilitan la gestión del cuidado a distancia, como para poder transitar la nueva vida en el lugar de destino. Todo ello mediado por la tecnología ofrecida por los smartphones. El foco de la tesis se encuentra en el uso de WhatsApp como aplicación principal para la coordinación de la vida de migrantes venezolanos en Lima.

The smartphone is an object that has transformed communication between people, the ways they socialize, and how they access information to make decisions that help them navigate life. The use value that each person assigns to the smartphone takes different forms, and gaps arise, whether due to access to the technology or the affordance that exists when comparing the qualities of the smartphone as an object with the skills of the people who use it. This object facilitates a multi-co-presence through which a person can be, through the virtuality enabled by the internet, in many different places and with different people at the same time. These possibilities are key for migrants, as they enable the maintenance and redefinition of family ties, while also facilitating the management of remote caregiving, enabling them to navigate a new life at their destination. All of this is mediated by the technology offered by smartphones. The focus of this thesis is on the use of WhatsApp as the primary application for coordinating the lives of Venezuelan migrants in Lima.
