Abstract
This research aims to analyze the social representations (RSS) of violence against women in feminine inhabitants of a coastal rural district of Peru. Due to the nature of the RSS and the present phenomenon of violence, the study made use of qualitative methodology that included the contextualization of the place, characterization of the study group, and exploring the definitions and explanations of violence against women. These last two points were explored using techniques of natural semantic networks (RSNS) and semi-structured interviews. The results showed that the 'violence against women' was defined and exemplified by the participants based on specific acts of physical and verbal violence generally manifest within the home. By deepening the participants' discourses, it was possible to integrate affective and relational aspects that enriched the definition of violence provided by the group. In addition, explanations justifying the presence of violence referred to traditional gender roles, exposure to violence in early stages of development and breaking community ties in the district.
