Abstract
The aim of this study was to describe the femininity of a group of women held in a prison in Lima. A qualitative methodology was used. Ten semi-structured interviews were conducted, which inquired about three areas: a) perception of femininity; b) femininity and stages of development; and c) the experience of femininity in prison. From this we sought to understand the meaning of being a woman for the participants and how they have experienced it throughout their lives and in different contexts, being the life in prison an important aspect to approach. It was found that their femininity revolves around two major issues from which their identity is set: a) the importance of motherhood to femininity; and b) the construction of femininity in violent environments.
