Informal environmental education is a method of developing environmental culture spontaneously and directly in any individual receiving the message, that is, without the need for the presence of a teacher or trainer monitor. One of the ways in which this type of environmental education is transmitted is through social networks, since they are a phenomenon that not only disseminates information, but also causes changes in attitudes, knowledge, and values in a specific population. In this sense, the university population is characterized by using social networks for various reasons such as entertainment, communicating to discuss topics of mutual interest or being informed of what is happening on a daily basis. The oil spill that occurred on the coast of Ventanilla 2022 is one of the most controversial ecological disasters that has occurred in recent years in the vicinity of the capital of Peru, Lima. The consequences were the death of different species of flora and fauna, long-term contamination of the soil and the water of the beaches surrounding the impact zone. The present investigation focuses on knowing the perception of the phenomenon of social networks in the university community from the case of the oil spill in Ventanilla 2022. For this, the study has a descriptive methodology with a phenomenological design in which considers a group of students from a private university in Metropolitan Lima, in order to know their opinions or personal experiences of what is perceived in social networks about the oil spill in Ventanilla 2022. The conclusion indicates that the phenomenon of social networks is of relevant importance because it transcends the information of the current environmental situation in university students, provoking concrete emotional reactions, concerns, reflections and learning, which have been directly reflected as a consequence in the case of the oil spill that occurred in Ventanilla in 2022.
