Gamarra.
The work of the artist Sandra Gamarra Heshiki Production/Reproduction [ Production/Reproduction] (2020-2021), is a polyptych of twenty oil paintings on canvas, which the artist has made through the appropriation of Los cuadros del Mestizaje del virrey Amat (1770) [The Paintings of the Mestizaje of Viceroy Amat (1770]. To this end, Gamarra had the copies reproduced in a copyists' workshop in China, which she later resignified by intervening the paintings with phrases by contemporary feminist thinkers, giving them a decolonial and gender reading. The interest in the study of this work lies in the process of its realization, which involved working as a team with the Museum of Art of Lima (MALI) with the idea of donating the work to this institution to be in charge of its exhibition and conservation. In this process, the work becomes more complex and becomes a simulacrum that reproduces the dynamics of production, donation and exhibition of the original series, as it is not exhibited and kept in the MALI warehouse. The work is loaded with meanings and can be considered as a hybrid between the colonial past and the Peru of the Bicentennial in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and the political crisis, where there was nothing to celebrate but there is much to remember and reflect on through Gamarra's work.
