The thesis plan seeks to establish a relationship between the level of exploration and evaluation disbursements made by copper mining companies supervised by the SMV during the period 2016 to 2023 and the profitability generated by these entities in the same term. The relevance of the research lies in the fact that the exploration and evaluation phase is a critical stage in the mining cycle for maintaining the continuity of mining operations but this stage is also characterized by a high level of risk, as not all exploration and evaluation efforts necessarily lead to future mineral extraction. Therefore, it is important to analyze whether the expenditures allocated for exploration and evaluation of mineral resources are related to the profitability of copper producers companies. The methodological level is quantitative and the research design is descriptive – correlational since the accounting and financial information of the companies belonging to the sample is collected and, through Spearman’s Correlation Coefficient, the level of relationship that exists between the study variables is statistically evaluated. Therefore, it is established as a general hypothesis that the level of exploration and evaluation disbursements is significantly related to the profitability of copper mining companies supervised by the SMV in the period 2016 to 2023. According to the empirical evidence obtained in this investigation, the analysis of the specified period indicates that there is no significant relationship between exploration and evaluation expenditures and the profitability of copper mining companies.
