Abstract
This investigation set out to establish the relationship between illness perception and quality of life related to health in a group of patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2). To achieve this, 44 patients between 44 and 80 years old (M= 64.64, SD= 8.81) were evaluated using a version of the Revised Perception Illness Questionnaire (IPQ- R) developed by Moss Morris et al. (2002) to assess illness perception in diabetes patients and the SF-36 Spanish version by Alonso, Prieto y Antó (1995) to evaluate the quality of life related to health. The results showed that perceptions of low personal control over diabetes, negative emotional responses, and the notion that the disease has serious consequences on their life were associated with a deteriorated quality of life in different dimensions. Additionally, participants showed good performance in global components of physical and mental health reflecting a preserved quality of life related to health. Similarly, there was a significant difference between perception of disease and quality of life in relation to socio-demographic variables such as sex, age, marital status, medical complications and HbA1c levels.
