Abstract
The present research aims to establish the relationship between the depressive personality dimensions (Personality styles with differentiated cognitive-affective vulnerabilities to depression) and self-descriptions. The sample consisted of 71 undergraduate students from Lima, ages between 18 and 27 years old (M = 21.37, SD = 2.39). In this manner, significant relationships were found between Self Criticism dimension and the self-scales of the following: Length (r = .21; p < .04), Modes of description (r = .21; p < .04), Conceptual Level (r = .34; p < .00), Self- Reflectivity (r = .25; p < .02), Tolerance of Contradictory Aspects of the Self (r = .27; p < .01), Self- Critical (r = .46; p < .00), Negative or positive Self-Regard (r = -.38; p < .00), Level of Relatedness (r = -.25; p < .02), Anxiety (r = .36; p < .00), Depression (r = .29; p < .01) and Level of Integrity (r = -.27; p < .01). Dependency dimension was related with the scale Differentiation (r = -.20; p < .05). With regard to the self scales, significant differences were found showing higher scores for females for Substantiality, Quality of Relatedness and Tolerance of Contradictory Aspects of the Self. No significant sex differences were found in the depressive dimensions, which are attributed to a less differenced gender identity over the last decades. The results emphasize Kernberg´s structure of personality concept linked to the relationship between Self Criticism with Tolerance of Contradictory and Anxiety.
