This study explored the relationship between burnout and purpose in life among oncology nursing staff working in critical care areas at the National Institute of Neoplastic Diseases (INEN) in Lima, Peru, in a post-pandemic context. The Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) and the Purpose in Life Test (PIL) were administered to a sample of 54 nurses from Intensive Care Units (ICU), Intermediate Treatment Units (ITU), and Emergency areas. Results indicated that 70% of participants were at risk of developing burnout (meaning they presented 2 symptoms of the condition), even when on the dimensions participants showed high scores in personal achievement and moderate scores in emotional exhaustion. With regards to purpose in life, participants showed a high average score. Further analysis revealed a negative correlation between emotional exhaustion with purpose in life, and a positive correlation between personal achievement and purpose in life. The study’s limitations are discussed, and recommendations are proposed to future studies with the variables and to promote the well-being of oncology nurses working in critical care areas.
