Abstract
This study sought to explore the experiences of perceived social support among women who have undergone breast cancer treatments in Lima. The research was developed under a qualitative perspective and phenomenological epistemological framework. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with six adult female survivors. From the analysis of the information, it was identified that there is a perceived need for social support during the treatment that not every expression of support received is perceived by the patients and that perceived support involves speed, security and constancy with which it is provided. Perceived support can be organized into four types: emotional, informative, instrumental and spiritual. Participants experienced feeling loved, irreplaceable, accompanied and spoiled in the face of perceived. In the absence thereof, they reported feelings of abandonment and resentment. Participants expressed dissatisfaction with the support provided by health personnel due to lack of tact and incomplete information on diagnosis and treatment. The participants perceived that social support is humanizing, facilitates adjustment, motivates treatment adherence, and favors physical and mental health. In conclusion, perceived social support is considered important during breast cancer treatment.
