Abstract
Peru is one of the main countries with industrial fishing production worldwide, and Chimbote has historically been a city dedicated to fishing. In this context, large-scale extraction and industrial fishing processing have a great impact on the Peruvian sea, which puts the ecosystem and marine diversity at risk. Studies indicate that the loss of biodiversity affects the subsistence and cultural continuity of people to a greater extent when they are in constant contact with natural environments. Thus, the present study aims to understand the perceptions of industrial fishermen on Biodiversity Loss. A qualitative methodology with phenomenological design was used to understand the perception that industrial fishermen of Chimbote have on the loss of marine biodiversity. It was found that industrial fishermen perceive higher risk from the loss of fish than from the loss of other larger marine animals, due to the fact that it is closely related to their work and livelihood. In addition, it was identified that they perceive risk in their work due to accidents, which, being a direct threat to the survival of the participants, would be perceived as a greater threat than the loss of marine animals.
