Abstract
Peruvian literature on poverty has neglected the role of spatial characteristics and their contribution to the level of household welfare. For this reason, the present study addresses the effect of geographic and socioeconomic variables at the group level on the growth rate of urban and rural households in Peru. To assess this, a theoretical model is used to capture the effect of spatial variables and their impact on consumption growth. Thus, the empirical identification strategy assumes an unobservable heterogeneity model that also captures the effect of invariant spatial variables over time. The main argument is that the spatial poverty traps experienced by rural households are best explained by the geographical model of poverty; while the individualistic model better explains the sample of urban homes.
